CBD Secretariat actively engaged in the 18th session of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF) held at the UN Headquarters in New York, USA. The CBD Secretariat actively participated in discussions to promote the integration of biodiversity into forest conservation, restoration, and sustainable use agendas.

CBD Secretariat is organizing a side event to discuss the United Nations Strategic Plan for Forests 2017-2030 and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework have interlinkages that can be leveraged for greater impact at the national level on forest conservation, restoration, and sustainable use.

The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework was adopted during COP-15, in Montreal, Canada.

Aichi Target 5: “By 2020, the rate of loss of all natural habitats, including forests, is at least halved and where feasible brought close to zero, and degradation and fragmentation is significantly reduced.”
Aichi Target 14: "By 2020, ecosystems that provide essential services, including services related to water, and contribute to health, livelihoods, and well-being, are restored and safeguarded, taking into account the needs of women, indigenous and local communities, and the poor and vulnerable."
Aichi Target 15: “By 2020, ecosystem resilience and the contribution of biodiversity to carbon stocks has been enhanced, through conservation and restoration, including restoration of at least 15 percent of degraded ecosystems, thereby contributing to climate change mitigation and adaptation and to combating desertification.”
18th session of the UN Forum on Forests:

CBD is taking part in the 18th session of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF18), a global platform that brings together countries and other stakeholders to address forest-related issues. The thematic priorities are protection, sustainable use of forests, forest products, and mobilizing finance for implementation. On the 8th, CBD will host a side event to discuss the interlinkages of the Global Forest Goals and the Global Biodiversity Framework.
International day of forests:

The theme for the 2023 International Day of Forests is "Forests and Health," which aims to highlight the vital role that forests play in sustaining human health and well-being. This includes the ways in which forests help to clean the air and water, provide essential food and fuel, and offer medicines and income to communities around the world. The theme also emphasizes the need to protect and sustainably manage our forests to ensure their continued benefits to people and the planet. 2022 UN Biodiversity Conference
Montreal, Canada. 7-19 December 2022
This year´s UN Biodiversity Conference includes two phases, the first was held virtually in October/2022, and the second part of the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention will be an in-person meeting in Montreal from December 7th to 19th, 2022. The key objective of the meeting is to finalize the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, including discussions on the new biodiversity targets, finance and benefit sharing.
COP 15 Restoration Day

The Restoration day at COP15 will be held at the Rio Pavillion during the COP15 in Montreal. The event will highlight the contributions of ecosystem restoration to the global biodiversity framework, as well as the climate change and land degradation neutrality targets. The event is co-organized by CBD, UN Environment Programme (UNEP), UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and UN Convention to Combat Deforestation (UNCCD). The UN Decade Flagship Initiatives will be announced during the event.
