SBSTTA 25 side event: KM-GBF Target 2 - from commitment to implementation and effective ecosystem restoration
16 October 2023, UN Office at Nairobi (UNON), Nairobi, Kenya.
In October 2023, the CBD Secretariat, in collaboration with UNEP and FAO, organized a side-event during SBSTTA-25. The primary focus was a comprehensive discussion on the ecosystem restoration targets in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, emphasizing the imperative transition from commitment to implementation.
The event explored into the strategic aspects of the Framework's Target 2, shedding lights on the needs of the countries in developing or revising national restoration plans within the National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs). South Korea, UK and Kenya presented their national restoration targets and policies in the event.
One highlight of the event was the presentation of progress in the headline indicator for monitoring Target 2 – the area under restoration. A draft methodology for data collection, compilation, and reporting, rooted in interoperability principles, was presented and discussed with the audience. This approach aims to enhance adaptive management and ensure accountability in meeting ambitious restoration commitments.
The event provided a platform for the exchange of knowledge, tools, and national experiences in ecosystem restoration and progress monitoring. It facilitated a crucial dialogue among countries, partners, and major groups to identify data, knowledge, and capacity building needs essential for the effective implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework.
