Capacity-building workshop for Mediterranean and other countries on the restoration of forests and other ecosystems to support the achievement of the Aichi Biodiversity Targets

20-24 March 2017, Agadir, Morocco

Context

As part of a series of workshops organized under the scope of the Forest Ecosystem Restoration Initiative (FERI), welcomed by the 12th Conference of the Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Secretariat of the Convention is convening a capacity development workshop on the conservation and restoration of forests and other ecosystems for the Mediterranean region, from 20 to 24 March 2017, in collaboration with and as an integral part of the Fifth Mediterranean Forest Week (5th MedFor).

This workshop will focus on forest and landscape restoration efforts in the context of meeting existing commitments under the three Rio Conventions, and in particular the Aichi Biodiversity Targets. Sessions of the workshop will offer a platform to share experiences and best practices and enable forestry and biodiversity experts to discuss challenges, examine gaps and provide solutions to urgent cross-sectoral issues. Participants will also have an opportunity to discuss ways to share information on scientific and technical innovations and approaches to access financial mechanisms, through interactions with other partner organizations across the Mediterranean.

Objectives

The overall aim of the workshop is to support Parties in developing and implementing national plans on ecosystem restoration, including with a focus on forests towards achieving Aichi Biodiversity Targets 5, 14 and 15 and related targets. Towards this aim, the workshop is planning the following activities:

  • Review of national commitments and their stages of implementation;

  • Learning about best practices from experts in the field, including on approaches taken to incorporate biodiversity into national plans and frameworks for implementation;

  • Review of relevant global and regional initiatives and relevant tools in support of country commitments;

  • Exchange of experiences and knowledge;

  • Exploring opportunities for resource mobilization.

The workshop will take place within the wider context of the Vth Mediterranean Forest Week, with dedicated sessions for the CBD participants. A specific agenda has been developed for the CBD participants.

If you haven't done so, we also invite you to complete the pre-workshop questionnaire, especially Sections 1 and 4 which are mandatory for all participants (one answer per country):
